Opix Will Integrate Espion

Ifra, October 15, 2001 – Opix AG, a leading provider of enterprise Media Asset Management and automated digital production systems, announced today it will integrate Espion, the innovative visual comparison technology from Canadian software developer Idée Inc.

"Quite often it is much easier to communicate a meaning in visual context than to convey it in words. The integration of Espion in Opix Media City will give our users greater flexibility when searching for images, particularly those that are difficult to describe or recall by keyword", says Anna Cleary, International Partner Manager for Opix.

Idée's technology uses advanced algorithms to search and retrieve images based on the attributes of the visual content, such as the contours, color, texture or contrast of an image. By selecting an image from the database, the user can invoke a ‘search for similar' or ‘search for modified' images. The results are displayed as thumbnails and ranked according to their degree of similarity to the original image.

Also built into the Espion visual search engine is a sketcher, meaning searches can be performed by sketching a simple representation of an image. A combination of text and visual attributes is also possible, so for example a search for the keyword "plants" can be supplemented by drawing the desired shape and color.

Information on pricing and availability of the integrated visual recognition module shall be released by Opix later this quarter.
